**"How to Transfer Your Florida Homestead Property Tax Savings to Your New Home"**

In Florida, you can transfer (or "port") all or part of your Save Our Homes (SOH) cap from your previous home to your new home using Portability of Homestead Assessment Difference. This allows you to carry over your property tax savings from your old homestead to your new one.
Steps to Port Your Property Tax in Florida:
- Purchase a New Home – Ensure it qualifies for the homestead exemption (must be your primary residence).
 - Apply for a Homestead Exemption – File Form DR-501 (Homestead Exemption Application) with your county Property Appraiser’s Office.
 - Submit a Portability Application – File Form DR-501T (Transfer of Homestead Assessment Difference) with the Property Appraiser.
 - Meet the Deadline – The deadline to apply is March 1st of the year after you establish your new homestead.
 - Eligibility Timeframe – You must have established your new homestead within 3 years of abandoning the old one.
 - Processing & Approval – Once approved, your new home will receive a reduced assessed value based on your transferred SOH savings.

How Much Can You Port?
- You can transfer up to $500,000 of your homestead’s SOH cap difference.
 - If your new home is more expensive, the full SOH difference applies.
 - If your new home is less expensive, the tax savings are prorated.
